Today I was in such deep sleep my cat came very close to my face and sniffed it to make sure I was still alive. Today I woke up to the sound of the mailman knocking at the door with a parcel full of colourful pretty things. Today I had a warm cup of tea and listened to Little Victories by lovely local legend R.Dyer.
The title song has a very special place in a lot of people’s hearts and it’s such a joy to see it come out into the world alongside a poetic music video. I treasure the memories of R. recording members of the audience on tape before each show, asking us to share something positive that happened to us that day. Those snippets of “little victories” were then incorporated into the performance alongside loops, synth, layers of soprano sax and bittersweet lyrics, all executed with immense vulnerability and a touching sense of humour.
Today, R.Dyer’s debut album is out and they are performing it at the Rose Hill with a full band and guests this evening. Sadly I cannot go, but highly recommend it – especially if you’ve never seen them before. It is a raw music hug for the soul, like having a good cry on a bad day and then finding a forgotten tenner in your old coat’s pocket and spending it all on chocolate cake.
